Discovery workshops for digital products
Understand the business, the users and the problem before you commit budget. Structured workshops with your team to map goals, users, constraints and success measures. We leave with a shared understanding of the problem and a clear direction.
Discovery Workshops: what it is and why it matters
A discovery workshop is a short, structured engagement that happens before design or development begins. Its job is to turn an idea, a frustration or a long feature wish-list into a shared, written understanding of what should be built, who it is for and how success will be measured.
Most failed software projects do not fail because of bad code. They fail because the team built the wrong thing, built too much of it, or discovered a critical constraint halfway through. Discovery moves those discoveries to the cheapest possible moment — before anyone has written a line of code.
Our workshops bring your decision-makers, a Toopasty product lead and a senior engineer into the same conversation. Commercial goals, user needs and technical reality are discussed together, so the plan that comes out is something your business wants and something we can actually deliver.
How long does it take?
Typically two to three weeks, including preparation, workshop sessions and the written summary.
Signs it’s the right time
If any of these sound familiar, Discovery Workshops could quickly pay for itself.
Best suited to: Founders validating a new idea · Teams replacing an ageing product · Businesses unsure where to start
You have an idea but no written specification
Stakeholders disagree on what version one should include
Previous quotes varied wildly because suppliers guessed at scope
You are replacing an existing system and need to understand what it really does
How we deliver Discovery Workshops
A clear, collaborative process with something tangible to review at every step.
Listen
Interviews with stakeholders and, where possible, real users to understand goals, pain points and constraints.
Map
User journeys, current processes and competitor products mapped visually so gaps and opportunities are obvious.
Prioritise
Features ranked by value and effort. We agree what is essential for launch and what can wait.
Recommend
A written summary with a recommended scope, risks, open questions and next steps — yours to keep.
Questions to ask before you hire
Whoever you choose for Discovery Workshops, these questions will help you compare suppliers.
Who will run the workshop?
You want people who will also be involved in delivery, not a sales team handing over to strangers.
What do I receive at the end?
Insist on written outputs you own: goals, priorities, journeys and a recommended scope.
Is discovery tied to a build contract?
Good discovery should be valuable even if you take the plan elsewhere.
How are disagreements resolved?
Ask how the supplier helps stakeholders reach decisions, not just how they record them.
How many people from our side should attend?
Usually two to five: the decision-maker, someone who understands day-to-day operations, and anyone who owns the budget or technical systems.
Can discovery be done remotely?
Yes. Most of our workshops run over video with collaborative whiteboards, which also makes it easier to involve people across locations.
What if discovery shows the idea is not viable?
Then it has saved you a great deal of money. We will tell you honestly and suggest alternatives where we can.
Does discovery include a quote?
It gives us what we need to produce an accurate, itemised quote — far more reliable than an estimate based on a short brief.
Do we own the work?
Yes. You own the code, designs and content we create for you.
Have a product idea? Let’s build it.
Whether you have a clear vision or just a problem you need to solve, we’re here to help you build it.
